St. Peter's Baldachin, the Bernini
masterpiece that amazes visitors to the Roman basilica's high
altar, is being restored for the Roman Catholic Jubilee in 2025.
"It will be a restoration of great symbolic value because the
Baldacchino, which rises solemnly above the great altar, marks
with its magnificence the location of the Tomb of Peter the
Apostle to whom the Vatican Basilica is dedicated", St Peter's
arch-priest Cardinal Mauro Gambetti told a press conference
Thursday.
Gambetti said it would be a "necessary, challenging and
conservative restoration, which is of special significance in
view of the now close Jubilee in 2025".
The project will not affect Pope Francis's Masses in the
basilica, he said.
