The European Union expects President
Sergio Mattarella to make a speedy recover from his pacemaker
operation and be back on top form soon, European Commission
President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X Wednesday.
Writing in Italian, the EC chief said: "I join all Italians in
wishing a speedy recovery to President Mattarella. Dear
President, all of Europe hopes to see you back in top form
soon".
83-year-old Mattarella was "fine" and in a "stable" condition on
Wednesday after undergoing surgery at Rome's Santo Spirito
hospital late on Tuesday to insert a pacemaker, sources said.
The head of state had the operation at 8pm on Tuesday after
completing his scheduled engagements for the day.
He then had a quiet night in the hospital's cardiology
department, does not have any symptoms following the operation
and read the newspapers on his Ipad on Wednesday morning, the
sources said.
Mattarella's office stressed that the surgery was planned and
was no cause for concern.
Sources said that Santo Spirito usually discharges patients
within 48 hours after an operation of this kind.
So, in theory, Mattarella could leave hospital later on
Wednesday, although Thursday is more likely, the sources said.
Tuesday's news that the president had been admitted to hospital
was met with get-well-soon wishes from politicians of all
colours, including Premier Giorgia Meloni.
"My warmest wishes to President Mattarella for a speedy and full
recovery," Meloni said on social media.
"Italy awaits you soon, with the same strength and dedication of
always".
