Donald Trump's tariffs are contrary
to the USA's request for its European allies to raise defence
spending to at least 5% of GDP, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani
said Thursday.
The imposition of 20% tariffs on EU goods by the US is
"contrary" to the request to increase to 5% of GDP for defense
spending, said Tajani, who is also deputy premier, on the
sidelines of a NATO ministerial meeting, underlining that
Article 2 of the Washington Treaty - the founding act of the
Alliance - provides for "economic collaboration between the
countries that are part of it".
Tajani stressed that "the trade war is certainly not part of
what Article 2 says, we must avoid it".
