The European Union should allow Rome
bigger margins on its debt to enable higher spending on defence,
European Council President Antonio Costa said Wednesday.
The EU Commission should give Italy more margin on debt, to
allow for an increase in defense spending, Costa said in an
interview published on Spiegel online.
To a question on how countries like Spain and Italy can reach
the GDP quotas requested by NATO, which is pushing for 3%, Costa
responded: "It certainly won't be easy. An important first step
would be for the Commission to give countries like Italy more
financial space to increase their defense spending, and this by
allowing for example exceptions to the European rules on debt".
