As part of the initiatives organised throughout Europe in the wake of Gelato Day, the European Day of Artisan Gelato on 24 March, the now traditional spring event dedicated to Italian gelato was held yesterday at the Italian Embassy in Austria, for the third year running, by the A.G.I.A. - Association of Italian Gelato Makers in Austria. Speakers at the event: the Deputy Italian Ambassador in Vienna, Gabriele De Stefano; Vienna´s City and Regional Councillor Michael Trinko; the President of A.G.I.A., Silvio Molin Pradel; the President of Artglace - Confederation of Artisan Gelato Makers Associations of the European Union, Domenico Belmonte; the Managing Director of Longarone Fiere Dolomiti (home of the Mig - International Exhibition of Artisan Gelato and Artglace), Giovanni De Lorenzi.
Presented on the occasion was the Hallelujah flavour, launched for Gelato Day 2025 as a tribute to the Jubilee, as well as the flavours of the year for Austria, dedicated by Italian gelato makers to the family of composers Strauss father and son. Professor Eduard Strauss, a descendant of the musicians and present at the event, received a commemorative plaque. Eissalon am Schwedenplatz and Paolo Bortolotti offered the aforementioned flavours to the evening's guests.
Merino Matiuzzi, from Zoppe di Cadore, whose family was among the first to sell ice cream on the streets of Vienna with carts, as evidenced by a small exhibition on display for the occasion, was the other guest of honour of the evening. There was great expectation for the Val di Zoldo ice cream makers, who again produced handmade ice creams and hot wafers at the Embassy during the event, using characteristic vintage machines.
