Strengthening cultural cooperation between the two countries

The Ambassador of Italy in Sofia, Marcello Apicella, met with the Director of the Bulgarian National History Museum, Prof. Boni Petrunova, for an exchange aimed at exploring future opportunities for cooperation between the Museum, the Italian Embassy, the Italian Cultural Institute in Sofia and the Italian National Museum System. The meeting was also attended by the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute Maria Mazza and Deputy Head of Mission Edoardo Di Paolo.
    The meeting was followed by an inspection of the National History Museum's vast collection, made famous by the ancient gold from the Varna necropolis and the exceptional treasures from the heyday of Thracian culture. During the visit, Director Petrunova and the Ambassador highlighted the numerous testimonies of the intense exchanges that characterised the successive civilisations in ancient, medieval and modern times between the Italian peninsula and Bulgarian territory.
    The visit to the Boyana Church (10th-19th cent.the visit to the Boyana Church (10th-19th century), designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, also provided the opportunity to reflect further on the protection of the architectural heritage and the interventions needed to hand it down intact to future generations, a topic to which the Sistema Italia in Bulgaria has dedicated particular attention by creating the International Forum 'History and Future - UNESCO sites in Italy and Bulgaria', organised by the Italian Embassy and Confindustria Bulgaria in collaboration with the Institute of Culture in Sofia, the Chamber of Architects, the Chamber of Builders, Europa Nostra Bulgaria, which will reach its third edition in the autumn.
