The project to restore the mosaic of the baths dating back to the 3rd century A.D. of the Garni Temple, the only surviving Greek-Roman colonnaded temple in Armenia, has begun. Built in the Ionic style, it is the best known structure in pre-Christian Armenia. Experts from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence are leading the work, as part of a larger project financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia.
The restoration work, which is expected to take about three years, will include both the recovery of the floor mosaic and a series of major structural works on the entire spa building.
The joint project, supported from the outset by the Italian Embassy in Jerevan, bears witness to the strong synergy between Italy and Armenia and is destined to have a significant impact on the tourism sector as well.
