The new pact for the Mediterranean will give new impetus to the essential relationship between the European Union and Tunisia and will also give a clear political signal of partnership in an increasingly contentious and unstable world. This was said by the EU Ambassador to Tunisia, Giuseppe Perrone, on the occasion of Europe Day in Tunis, adding that the "Team Europe" approach is at the heart of the EU strategy in Tunisia.
"The Member States represent the strength of Europe, they all work tirelessly to promote our common goals and to ensure that Tunisia takes root in Europe. Our initiatives are fuelled by the constant and tireless contribution of the Member States. The EU, said Perrone, 'is not a mere summation of these Member States.
It embodies the spirit, aspirations and values of a global player working for peace, free trade, the promotion of human rights, the primacy of international law, including the principles of inviolability of borders and the prohibition of the use of force'. Dear friends, the past year has been marked by many challenges, here and elsewhere, and unfortunately by wars that have been dragging on our doorstep for years with no solution in sight.
"In Gaza, we are horrified by the atrocities and massacres that kill many innocent civilians, including children, every day. Humanitarian aid must resume immediately and must never be politicised." The EU remains open to the world, ready to cooperate, to listen, to build bridges. Today, the EU is at the forefront in defending and promoting free trade on a global scale. It is recognised as a reliable, credible and responsible partner, constituting a central pillar of international trade and investment For Tunisia, the EU is a strong and long-standing partner and today, it is determined to stand by the Tunisians to move forward together, in respect, listening and mutual trust, Perrone concluded.
