Pope Francis does not deserve the
hypocrisy of those who deport migrants, centre-left opposition
Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein told the House in a
session commemorating the late Argentine pontiff Wednesday.
"The death of Pope Francis deprives us of a significant voice
who was able to question believers and non-believers, deserves
our condolences; what he does not deserve is the hypocrisy of
those who never listened to his appeals and today try to bury
his powerful message in rhetoric, of those who deport migrants,
take money from the poor, deny the climate emergency and deny
care to those who cannot afford it", she told MPs to applause -
but not from the government benches.
Francis criticised United States President Donald Trump's
deportation of migrants shortly before his death on Easter
Monday at the age of 88.
