On 9 April, the Ambassador of Italy to Mexico, Alessandro Modiano, carried out a mission to Guadalajara aimed at enhancing Italy's participation as guest of honour at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (Fil) in 2026, announced on 27 March by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, during a press conference at the Farnesina.
During the mission, Ambassador Modiano had a fruitful meeting with the Minister of Culture of the State of Jalisco, Gerardo Ascensio Rubio, and with the Coordinator for Social Development of the State, Andrea Blanco Calderón, during which the Government of Jalisco and the Italian Embassy confirmed their common commitment to strengthening cultural relations between Italy and Mexico.
Ambassador Modiano then held a working meeting at the University of Guadalajara with the President of FIL, Trinidad Padilla, and the Director of the Fair, Marisol Shultz, aimed at outlining a roadmap of events leading up to the 2026 edition of FIL. Ambassador Modiano then emphasised the role of Italy and the breadth of our country's cultural proposal during interviews with the press and local television stations.
"The invitation extended to Italy to participate as guest of honour at the FIL next year confirms the extremely dynamic phase of relations between Italy and Mexico, and the investment that the Italian government is making in the country, as part of a strategy of strengthening relations with selected strategic partners in the world, which includes Mexico. Our presence at Fil 2026 will make it possible to showcase the best not only of Italian literature and the Italian publishing industry, but of Italian culture in all its expressions,' said Modiano.
During the mission, the Ambassador finally celebrated Italian Research Day in the World 2025, participating in the 5th 'Habitat and Sustainability' Congress at the Iteso University of Guadalajara, which was attended by 13 Italian professors from the Turin Polytechnic and the Universities of Calabria, Ferrara, Udine and Venice. Speaking on the panel 'Towards 2030: designing the city, between false myths, tradition and innovation', Ambassador Modiano emphasised the depth of the scientific ties between Italy and Mexico, identifying university cooperation as one of the most dynamic pillars of the bilateral partnership.
