An exhibition of precious Italian tapestries, displayed for the first time all together in the United States, has been set up at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and can be visited until 26 May. The cycle of seven sumptuous tapestries has been restored to its original splendour and depicts scenes from the famous Battle of Pavia, a decisive victory in 1525 in which the army of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V defeated King Francis I of France. Combined with an important selection of parade and ceremonial weapons and armour from the 16th century, these monumental tapestries take visitors into the world of Renaissance history, fashion and military technology. During this era, monumental tapestries served as engaging tools for dynamic storytelling, political propaganda and the representation of history. The exhibition 'Knights in Shining Armour. The Pavia Tapestries' exhibition organised by the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte and The Museum Box in collaboration with the Kimbell Art Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Consulate General of Italy in Houston and the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles, offers an unprecedented look at some of the most important examples of these dynamic textile compositions.
