Italy's resident population fell again
last year, Istat said Tuesday, decreasing by 37,000 to 58
million 934,000 units as of January 1, 2025.
"2024 shows a demographic dynamic in continuity with that of
the recent post-pandemic years: a limited decline in the
resident population, the confirmation of a strongly negative
natural dynamic, a positive migratory dynamic," the stats agency
said.
The data were supplied by the president of Istat, Francesco
Maria Chelli, in a hearing at the Parliamentary Commission of
Inquiry on the economic and social effects deriving from the
demographic transition.
"The population decline - he specified - does not involve all
areas of the country in a generalized way: while in the North
the population increases by 1.6 per thousand, the Center and the
South record negative variations equal to -0.6 per thousand and
-3.8 per thousand respectively".
