Deputy Premier, Transport Minister and
rightwing Laague party leader Matteo Salvini said Tuesday he did
not think retaliating against US President Donald Trump's
tariffs was not intelligent and he hoped European Commission
President Ursula von der Leyen had been misconstrued when she
said earlier in the day that the EU was ready to strike back
against Trump's April 2 moves.
"Taking revenge for the tariffs? Opening trade wars with the US
is an unfortunate choice, it's not in anyone's interest. I hope
von der Leyen was misunderstood or badly translated, waging war
on the US is not intelligent, things need to be resolved at the
table", said Salvini, who recently said the only tariffs that
damaged entire sectors in Italy and in Europe were imposed by
Brussels and that it was necessary to negotiate with Trump.
Salvini added Tuesday:
"With the Trump administration, it is necessary to negotiate,
trade, taking revenge for companies is not a good starting
point. He was elected by the Americans to serve the interests of
the Americans".
