The government has declared a state
of emergency after a 4-4 magnitude earthquake and 35 seismic
swarm aftershocks in the Campi Flegrei, an area west of Naples
where residents took to the streets, schools were closed and
trains cancelled after the latest seisimic incident Tuesday,
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said Tuesday.
"The persistence of the seismic swarm, which in two months has
recorded three shocks clearly felt by the population, suggests
the need to proceed with the declaration of a state of national
emergency in the Campi Flegrei area", said Musumeci, at the end
of the summit chaired in Rome which was attended by the head of
the Civil Protection department Fabio Ciciliano, the head of the
prevention and reconstruction department of Casa Italia Luigi
Ferrara, cabinet chief Riccardo Rigillo and the head of the
legislative office Francesco De Luca.
