India is a priority partner for Italy against Donald Trump's tariffs, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told the Italy-India business forum in New Delhi Friday welcoming the US president's U-turn in pausing most of his hefty tariffs for three months.
"The economic partnership between Italy and India is even more important now, as we face the global consequences of changes in US trade policy", said Tajani, who is also deputy premier.
"As Italy, we believe that the best way forward is dialogue.
"Trade wars help no one and harm everyone.
"Our goal is to achieve zero tariffs.
"At the same time, we want to take advantage of this opportunity to grow in key and high-potential markets.
"For this reason, I have launched an Export Action Plan, in which India and all of Asia are top priority partners".
The Forza Italia leader went on: "I think Trump's decision was positive because it goes in the direction we hoped for in the dialogue between Europe and the US. Trade wars are not good for anyone, we are for lowering duties and reciprocity is needed".
Tajani also said that the European Union was banking on Premier Giorgia Meloni's trip to see Trump next Thursday in Washington.
"Our Prime Minister's mission to Washington on the 17th will be useful to strengthen the dialogue not only between Italy and the United States but also between Europe and the United States, because Europe is banking heavily on Meloni's mission to be able to dialogue and push the United States to a positive negotiation to reach zero duties," Tajani told Mattino Cinque.
"There is no need to panic... the stock markets have also gone down because of the panic.
"We need to face the situation with determination and seriousness, therefore dealing with the situation rather than worrying about it.
"And this is what the Italian government is doing",
