Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein on Wednesday took aim at Premier Giorgia Meloni after United States President Donald Trump said international leaders were "calling us up, kissing my ass" and were "dying to make a deal" on the tariffs he has imposed on imports.
On Tuesday Meloni announced that she will be in Washington on Thursday, April 17, for a meeting with Trump.
Meloni, the leader of the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, has friendly relations with Trump and there is talk of her acting as a "bridge' between the Europe and the US and helping to mediate over the 20% tariffs imposed on EU goods.
"First Trump calls us Italians and Europeans parasites, and the Meloni government turns a deaf ear by lowering its head," said Schlein.
"Then, on the same day that Giorgia Meloni triumphantly announces that she will be received at Trump's court on April 17, the American president used unrepeatable words to insult those who propose a meeting to defuse a global financial and economic crisis generated by his tariffs policy.
"The self-styled patriots have lowered their heads once again and are exposing businesses and workers to enormous risks and a collapse of our international credibility.
"It's not a good look for Italy".
