Premier Giorgia Meloni said Friday
that it is necessary to keep pressing for an end to the war in
Ukraine on the way into the European Political Community (EPC)
summit in Tirana.
Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Istanbul on Friday for
their first direct peace talks in more than three years, but
hopes of a breakthrough are low after Vladimir Putin opted not
to take up a challenge to meet face-to-face with Volodymyr
Zelensky in Turkey.
"It is necessary to demand an immediate ceasefire for a peace
agreement that gives Kyiv security guarantees," Meloni said.
"We mustn't throw in the towel.
"Over the last few hours we have seen who is ready to make
important steps for peace and who, on the other hand, is less
willing".
