Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday
hailed a list of safe countries for migrants to be repatriated
to drawn up by the European Commission and including Bangladesh,
Egypt and Tunisia, three countries where many of the migrants
arriving in Italy come from.
"I welcome with great satisfaction the proposal for an EU list
of safe countries of origin presented by the European Commission
and which includes, among others, Bangladesh, Egypt and
Tunisia", she said.
Meloni added that it was "equally positive the proposal to
anticipate the entry into force of some components of the
Migration and Asylum Pact, in particular the possibility of
designating safe countries of origin with territorial exceptions
and for certain categories and of applying the 20% criterion".
Italy is hoping to revive its innovative but controversial
project of processing migrants at Italian-run centres in
Albania, a scheme which has so far been stymied by the courts
because the countries of origin including Egypt and Bangladesh
were not ruled as wholly safe.
