"We were liberated on May 8,
1945," and "even today, 80 years later, our deepest gratitude
goes to the Allied soldiers and the European resistance
movements who, with all their strength and many sacrifices,
defeated the Nazi regime; we will not forget it," said
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Federal President, at the
ceremony commemorating the war's end in the Bundestag.
Steinmeier continued, "Our gratitude goes to the Americans, the
English, the French, and all those who fought alongside them
against the National Socialist terror. We also know how much the
Red Army, Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, and everyone else
who fought there contributed. At least 13 million soldiers and
twice as many civilians died. The Red Army liberated Auschwitz."
